Dust accumulates inside every computer over time, clogging fans and vents and trapping heat. Regular cleaning is one of the simplest ways to keep your PC running well.

Before You Start

Always power off your computer and unplug it completely before opening the case or cleaning any components.

What You'll Need

Compressed air (in a can, or a proper electronics duster), a soft brush, and a lint-free cloth. Avoid vacuum cleaners directly on internal components — they can generate static electricity that damages sensitive parts.

For Desktops

  1. Open the case following the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Use compressed air in short bursts to blow dust out of fans, heatsinks, and vents, holding fan blades still to prevent them from spinning too fast.
  3. Gently brush away stubborn dust from crevices.
  4. Wipe external surfaces with a slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

For Laptops

Laptops are more delicate and often require partial disassembly to reach internal fans properly. Blowing compressed air into external vents can help, but a full internal clean is best left to a technician unless you're experienced with laptop repair.

How Often to Clean

Every 6 to 12 months is generally sufficient for most environments, though dustier settings may call for more frequent cleaning.

Signs You've Waited Too Long

Loud fan noise, a machine that runs hotter than usual, or performance that improves noticeably after cleaning are all signs dust had built up more than it should have.
